23 Modern Boat Shoes That are Trending (Men & Women)

-

The boating season is here. Most of us are searching for a brand of boat shoes that are both comfortable and safe. The range of boat shoes for men and women is quite extensive, and it’s essential to always keep safety in mind and fashion.

For many years boaters weren’t as lucky as we are now. It wasn’t until 1935 that the idea of a non-slip boat shoe was invented. The first boat shoes were invented by Paul Sperry, who based it all on his dog’s paws. He noticed that his dog never slipped on ice, and he recreated the tiny lines and cracks in a dog’s paw and applied that to boat shoes.

Things have come a long way since then. We can all have cheap boat shoes, throw away the old flip flops and sneakers, and stride out on the deck. Nothing feels better than well-fitting, safe, and comfortable boat shoes as we spend our days on the water making the most of our leisure time.

Boat Shoe Fundamentals

Fundamental Rule #1

Never, and I mean never, wear socks with your boat shoes. You should also never wear trousers that go past the ankle. If you are wearing khakis, make sure they are short. If you are wearing skinnies, make sure they are turned up.

Fundamental Rule #2

Never wear shorts or trousers that are darker than your boat shoes. You will find that the average boat shoe comes in chocolate or sandy colors. Therefore it should be hard to find clothing that is lighter to wear. Now that we have those two fundamental rules let’s talk about the four different looks you can pull off with boat shoes.

Boat Shoe Looks

1. The Trendy Boat Shoe Look

If you are someone who always wants to be at the top of your fashion game, you should try the Sperry Topsiders tri-colored boat shoes.

I think we can all agree that color blocking is here to stay. And what better way to do a little color blocking than with a trendy, Topsiders tri-colored boat shoe? You can go in simple jeans or a patterned pair of shorts. And since you are color-blocking, you can be as bold as you dare to be.

2. The Preppy Boat Shoe Look

If you love the preppy look and feel, you must have a pair of Ralph Lauren boat shoes in your closet. You can go with a simple pair of khaki shorts, a colored pair of chinos, or your swim trunks. With this style of boat shoe, the possibilities are truly endless.

If you want people to think you just stepped off a yacht, this is the shoe you need. It has the Yale graduate feel. It’s sophisticated and trendy all in you. If you decide to wear chinos, make sure you roll them up. That way, everyone can fully view this amazing-looking boat shoe.

2. The Sporty Boat Shoe Look

If I had to describe boat shoes in two words or less, they would be stylish and functional. Not only do they look good, but they are comfortable as well. You could walk around in them all day, and your feet would be just fine.

I would suggest going with a pair of Suede Sperry Topsiders for that sporty look. They go great with both jeans and khakis. To get a more athletic look, get a pair with a thicker sole.

4. The Dressy Boat Shoe Look

Yes, you can dress it up with a pair of boat shoes. Try the Sebago Patent Leather boat shoes. They can make your summer suit look a little more stylish. This look has been trendy over the last year. Remember the fundamental rules I shared with you earlier, and you should have no problem rocking the dressy boat shoe look.

3 Things To Consider When Buying Boat Shoes

Now that you know a few different looks you can accomplish with boat shoes let’s talk about how to buy a pair. As I stated before, boat shoes are incredibly versatile. That means you have to make many decisions when ready to buy a pair. Here are a few things to consider when you are prepared to buy a pair of boat shoes.

  • You first need to ask yourself, do you want waterproof boat shoes? For the most part, boat shoes are weather resistant. If the shoes get wet, the material won’t get damaged. But weather-resistant doesn’t mean waterproof. If you don’t want your feet to get wet, you need to make sure you bring waterproof boat shoes.
  • The second thing you want to consider is material. Do you want leather, fabric, or synthetic materials? Of course, the material you choose will depend on how you want your shoe to look. Most boat shoes are made with a combination of leather and canvas. If you want your shoes to breathe, you should choose a variety of leather and synthetic materials.
  • Last but not least, decide whether you want to lace them up or slip them on. Slip-on shoes are great for those who won’t get their shoes on quickly. However, it’s the lace-ups that are more stylish. It might take a few more seconds to put them on, but it’s well worth it.

Always remember that boat shoes make a profound fashion statement. They are classic shoes that everyone will stop and look at. Even if you are more concerned with function versus style, you still want to make sure you get a pair that looks good on you. It would be best if you considered some of the top boat shoe brands, Sperry, Timberland, Keds, and Rockport. While they will be more expensive than other brands, it’s well worth it.

When it comes to boat shoes, quality is one of the most critical factors. And if you want your shoes to last, you need to purchase from a trusted brand. Take the time to research multiple brands before you make your purchase.

Use comparison shopping sites to find the best possible deals on some top brands. Shopping.com, Nextag.com, and Pricegrabber.com are all great comparison shopping sites. All of them will be able to help you find high-quality, affordable boat shoes.

Boat Shoe Care

Like any other shoes,  boat shoes must be cared for. The difference with a boat shoe is its exposure to saltwater, sun, wind,  rain, and a tougher environment.

To protect your new boat shoes, you need to regularly use a cream water-based shoe polish. The effects of the salt water and then the sunshine can quickly dry the leather out. Apply this regularly to build up a layer of defense, and ideally, try and do this after every boating session. It would help if you also avoided any of the new quick-drying boat shoe polishes, which often contain alcohol or silicone, which will dry the leather out.

If you have boat shoes made of suede, then a good sprinkling of cornmeal massaged into the surface is a handy tip. Rub the cornflour in and then leave them in a warm area to dry overnight. In the morning, brush the cornmeal off with a bristle brush and realign the grain of the shoe.

Using a Washing Machine

The canvas type of boat shoe is often sold as being machine washable. While this can be done, it’s better to wash them by hand with some light detergent.

Don’t try this if they contain any leather but should they just be made of the canvas; then a hand wash is better than a cycle in a machine. This will help to keep the boat better for longer.

Remember the old-fashioned shoehorn that nobody uses nowadays? Well, it’s a good idea to dig it out from the cupboard and use it again for your boat shoes. This will help keep them in shape and help keep the heel’s strength.

Dry Them Slowly

Always dry them in natural warmth. Please don’t put the shoes out when wet in direct sunlight. Also, don’t try and dry them with a hairdryer or leave them on top of a heater. This is particularly true if they are made of leather. If you try and dry out leather boat shoes too quickly, they will develop cracks and splits.

If you do find that you have got some oil or have some stains on your boat shoes, then try these handy tips. Various spots can be removed with a pencil eraser with a vinegar and water solution. If that doesn’t get rid of the oil stain, you can try and apply some rubber cement and allow it to dry.

Once it’s dry, you can then peel it off, and hopefully, the stain will be gone. Whatever you do, make sure you take some care of your boat shoes. Even a small amount of care is better than no care at all.
